10.5: Use Mail's IMAP Subscription Lists to limit Mail folders Apps
In Leopard's Mail, select an IMAP folder that is stored on the server, and select Get Account Info (control-click on the account to see this option, or press Command-I). In the Account Info window is a Subscription List tab. Using this tab, one should be able to unsubscribe to Gmail's "All Mail" folder, thus reducing the number of messages stored locally, and the number of messages unread by a factor of two.

[robg adds: A couple of comments from users on the queue review site further clarify this hint...

Comment #1: "Still doesn't work for me on my Linux dovecot IMAP server, Apple Mail's subscription tab just shows up empty and disabled, just like it always did, even though subscribing to only specific mailboxes work just fine in Thunderbird or even Microsoft Outlook, using the same server."

Comment #2: "My Gmail folders do not appear in the Subscription List. The usefulness of the hint is for people who have Exchange accounts. My university has a huge Public folder on its Exchange server. The old Mail.app would spend a lot of time indexing every item (thousands) in every sub-folder. Now you can simply unsubscribe from them. It seems as though all of the Public folders were unsubscribed by default (a wise move).]

Gmail Imap does not support subscribe/unsubscribe, which is why there are no folders to unsubscribe from.

Subscribe and unsubscribe with a GMail IMAP account work fine with Thunderbird.

Ditto. No love to Google's IMAP servers.

Assuming that you could unsubscribe to GMail... would that then mean that you couldn't move deleted items over to the All Mail folder? Or would it simply not download those mail items that are in the folder, but still allow you to view the messages which are online?

I cannot unsubscribe from neither Starred or All Mail from my Gmail. Do you include [Gmail] in your IMAP path?

Same problem as others - nothing is in my "subscribe/unsubscribe" list. This is a shame, as combining this with the previous "[Gmail]" prefix hints would finally let me use Gmail IMAP the way I want - just like POP, but with nifty server-side features. :)

It would be nice to remove All Mail, but even if that doesn't work you can still change your Unread Mail Smart Folder to reject contents of that folder. That's what I did.

From Help (emphasis added):

Subscription List: Use this pane to subscribe to and unsubscribe from public and shared folders that are available to your IMAP account.

In effect, nothing has changed; Apple still doesn't care about IMAP. It took years for them to be able to move a message between folders without destroying the delivery timestamp (which works now, btw).

Doesn't work for me either with Gmail.

Being able to unsubscribe from All Mail is the only thing that would make Gmail's IMAP implementation not suck. I end up with *TWO copies of every email, one in its own label and one in All Mail, and marking one read won't mark the other read, so I just have to go to All Mail and mark all read.

As much as Gmail's IMAP sucks, it's still better than using POP3, especially when I check my mail on both my Mac and my iPhone.

On the off chance someone from Google will read this, I want to second all of the above: It is ridiculous to have to download two copies of every $#@&&! message because we can't stop synching All Mail. Without this absurd bug gmail IMAP would be great. We hate All Mail! Set us free...

In fact IMAP folder subscription doesn't work at all on Leopard 10.5.0 and 10.5.1

It's not true that Gmail IMAP does not support subscriptions. It all works fine in Eutourage. This seems to be a problem with Apple Mail.
