Use custom iPhone ring tones with the 1.1.2 firmware iPhone

According to some posts on tuaw.com (here and here), it's now (once again) easy to add your own 30 to 40 second (maximum) ringtones to the iPhone.

Just trim down a song or sound (using iTunes, GarageBand, Audacity, etc.), save an AAC-encoded version, change the .m4a suffix to .m4r, and drag the file into the Ringtones folder of the iTunes library (you may have to delete the original .m4a file from the library if it's already in iTunes).

Y ou can add songs longer than 40 or so seconds to the iTunes ringtone section of the library, but they won't sync to the iPhone or show up in ringtones tab of the iPhone sync page in iTunes.

Awesome. Watch that time limit though; Garageband seemed to indicate my file was only 39.8 seconds long, but was recognized as being 44 in iTunes. That tripped me up for a couple minutes.

Finally... my FFIV Red Wings ringtone is back!

Garageband padding fix

I had that problem, too.

If you move the purple end-of-song marker in the 'ruler' at the top of the garageband window so that the marker lines up with the end of your ringtone, then export the sound, it won't add the extra padding.

Did this with a couple songs I have from back in the "buy it on CD" days.
Worked great. The OP is correct though, if you have them in iTunes, you gonna need to delete them first. every time I tried to put the m4r back in, with the original in iTunes, it would just add that file to the Library, and never show up in Ringtones.

I changed the name by adding -ringtone to the end and everything worked fine.

The new method works great on my iPhone. But I still have a strange artifact from the old days.

Back on the first day I got my wife's iPhone I started experimenting with ways of making ringtones. Before any of the now common methods came out I managed to get one song recognized as a ringtone, and it's still there -- all 4:08 of it that plays as long as the phone rings. It's survived all the upgrades thus far and still plays its entire length. Go figure. Unfortunately, it's not a song my wife likes so it never gets used.

It wont drop into the Ringtones folder. Where do you rename it? in the Finder's Get Info?

changing the suffix

I have the Finder set to show file suffixes. I don't know if that makes a difference.

If you can see the m4a suffix on the ringtone file (Foo.m4a) then just click on it, press return, and change the m4a to m4r, and press return again. Then doubleclick to add it to the iTunes library.

If you can't see the m4a suffix in the Finder, you'll have to change the Finder preferences or use a utility to change it.
