10.5: Add multiple spacers to the Dock System 10.5
If you'd like to break up the icons in your Dock into groups, you can insert invisible spacers, much like the blank spaces which you can put into toolbars:
To add a spacer to the applications (left) side of the Dock, run the following in the terminal: To see your changes, restart the dock with killall Dock. To add a spacer to the documents (right) side of the Dock, run the following: Again, killall Dock to see your changes. Once the spacer is in the Dock, you can drag it around to move it. You can even drag it between the application and document sections, if you wish. Run either command multiple times to add multiple separators.

[robg adds: I tried this in 10.4, but it's definitely a 10.5-only hint, and it works as described -- the image above is from my machine. It seems this ancient hint can finally be retired (though the spacers are a bit wider than I would prefer, if I actually used the Dock much).]

this is great!

i've been using max's blank dock separators for years, (from here), but if I accidentally clicked on them, an alert would pop up saying the app was damaged (through 10.4) or couldn't be run on this architecture (leopard), but now I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Same here,

I used Dock Dividers and with the new Leopard you would get a black grey oval .

this is a great hint.

Awesome!

I was using these transparent icon applescripts and folders to achieve this. But it didn't look that good on Leopard.

Thanks a lot!

Oups... OK. I understand that we can erase the spacers, just like we would erase any icon from the dock...

I noticed that when I accidentally bring an icon of the dock (either an application or a document) exactly on a "spacer", it then disappears, erased from the dock ...pouff!

Interesting thing I noticed after applying the two commands:
You can drag the divider from the documents section of the dock to the app section. After that I applied the second command again and got a third divider. So I believe one could add a not defined number of this to the Dock.
