Enable features on Microsoft keyboard and Logitech mouse Other Hardware
The problem: you have a Microsoft Keyboard (i.e. a keyboard with Microsoft special keys like Home, Browser, Mail, etc.) and a Logitech mouse with many buttons (in my case, a Logitech MX Revolution), and most of the buttons are plain unresponsive in OS X.

I have written a complete tutorial on my blog on how to use ControllerMate and AppleScript to get all these buttons to work. Although the information to do this is scattered throughout the web and you can piece it together (it took me about five hours to get it all set up the first time), I've gathered it up in one spot. It does not go into "for Dummies" detail, but if you have questions, please ask (preferentially directly at the blog entry, but as you like).

[robg adds: I haven't tested this one.]

Enable features on Microsoft keyboard and Logitech mouse

Erm, why not use the keyboard drivers delivered by Microsoft (free download) and mouse drivers such as USB Overdrive (shareware)?

I think this tip would make sense if Controller Mate would be freeware, but to buy a 15 $ app and then go a long way to configure everything seems somewhat inefficient.

Maybe someone could point out what specific benefits this solution offers?

Unfortunately, for some reason USB Overdrive won't allow you to configure the search button located on the top of the Logitech MX Revolution. This is particularly frustrating as the button is in a very convenient location on the mouse.

Ah, ok, that's a drag, of course. I just checked Alessandro's USB Overdrive homepage, and it seems that he currently does a rewrite of USB Overdrive, so hopefully that issue will soon be resolved. (I am using his driver since at least five years and never had a problem. All upgrades were free… one of the most solid drivers that I know.)

For what it's worth, SteerMouse lets me customize the Search button on a Logitech VX Nano.

I've never had problems with either MS IntelliPoint or Logitech Control Center. Can't see why this hint is needed, but am willing to be convinced.

I had numerous problems with external USB drives which went away when I uninstalled LCC (the latest, 2.2.2). LCC uses a controversial "Application Enhancer" framework which uses techniques not supported by Apple. I regret not being able to use LCC because I love all the cute little buttons on my MX510 mouse... YMMV, of course, especially if you don't use external USB devices, or you don't experience problems.

I just discovered that Logitech has a new version of LCC (2.4.0) which no longer installs APE application enhancer -- I'm about to try it.

try (in the shell)

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to reveal posix file "/"'

This will open a finder window but, if you have LCC240 installed, hit you with a bunch of error messages...

At least it did for me and so I switched back to LCC231.

Yeah, I was even able to hack MS's Keyboard kext to work with a Microsoft Natural keyboard with a PS/2 connector, connected to a PS/2 to USB device I found. The keyboard works great, and even the extra keys work, such as the sleep button, mute, volume up/down. Haven't tried configuring the other buttons.
