10.5: Place an icon on an NTFS drive in Leopard System 10.5

This process was covered for Tiger in this hint, but things have changed in Leopard; it's now a bit easier:
  • Paste your icon (in the Get Info window) onto a USB thumb drive formatted as FAT32. The name of the drive doesn't matter.
  • Launch Windows through Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.
  • Open the thumb drive in Windows.
  • Select Folder Options… from the Tools menu, and set it to show invisible files.
  • Copy the two files .VolumeIcon.icns and ._[cr]File, where [cr] is a carriage return, to the NTFS drive.
That's it! The icon will appear nicely in Leopard.

Ok.. now how do you get this icon to show up in the startup drive selector you get when you boot up holding down option? That's what /I'd/ like to know. (:<

I submitted this while I was logged in. I don't know why it is posted as Anonymous!

Anyway, the icon will not appear in the Option select window. This has been the case all along with BootCamp.

The second file to copy is named "._(cr)_file", where (cr)=carriage return. Note the second underline character. The file will appear in Windows as two lines that look like:

._
_file

The last step is missing.

"Paste what you have copied onto your boot volume root."

In my case, it did not have the ._file item, but worked just the same.

Actually, copying it to the NTFS drive was the actual process, but it is clearer when you say "paste" rather than "copy to".

I use MacFUSE and NTFS-3G to give OS X read/write access to NTFS partitions (including that created by Boot Camp).

With these installed, it's possible to change the Windows drive's icon in the regular Get Info copy/paste fashion.

You're right. Also, installing MacFuse and NTFS-3G removes any previous icon from view. It is a lot easier to put back though.

Anyone knows how to do this in Snow Leopard??
It seems that this trick doesn't work anymore for SL.
