10.5: Use To Dos in Mail to add notes to messages Apps
More than once, I have wanted to keep some notes with some email in Mail, to remind me to do something specific referred to in the mail. But there is no way of editing an email that has been sent to you. There were a couple of hints here on changing the subject line of a message, but that would also change the From address.

There is a cool way to keep a small amount of notes using To Dos in the new version of Mail.app. Just control-click anywhere on the message (note that if you click on the menubar To Do button, Mail will create a separate To Do in the To Do folder) and select New To Do from the contextual menu. Then type whatever you want to and it will show up with the message. Type whatever you want to see in a single long line; if you try to use Control-Return to enter a line break, Mail won't be able to save the To Do.

A plugin for Mail called MailTags offers a even smarter and easier way to keep notes on particular emails - something that Leopard Mail can't do by itself.

It provides a pane in which you can add notes to a specific email and an option to set the note as the email's subject.

In the Tiger version you can also set to-dos on a specific email, and you soon will be able to do the same in the public beta of the Leopard version.

Read more about it here: http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html

As far as I can tell, there's no difference between this and clicking the To Do button. Both create a new entry in the To Do folder.

If you do it using the to do button, the to do doesn't appear along with the mail. But if you right click on the message and make a new to do, it stays with the mail and whenever you click on it, you can see the to do on top of the mail.

An easier way is to select the text your interested in the message then control click the message and select "New To do" it will use the selected text to fill out the To DO message.

Here's what I don't get about todo or note?

They don't reference back or open the email made for. It's worthless in my opinion.

I want to make a todo or note, click on it and then see the email.

In Tiger all I did was Flag an email. Made a Smart Folder named Todo and it collected the flag messages.

And when you double click on a note or todo in Leopard, nothing happens. I expected a double click to get the linked email.

"And when you double click on a note or todo in Leopard, nothing happens. I expected a double click to get the linked email."

Actually, if you use the hint outlined above, the todo is linked to the email. In the ToDo list, there is a small right arrow just to the left of the Due Date that when clicked brings up the email and the todo text. In iCal, Get Info on a todo includes a URL which will open the email that generated the todo.

Todos created on mail messages do reference back to the original email... or they should anyway. You can go into iCal, double-click the todo, then choose "Show in Mail", and Mail pops up showing the original email message the todo is attached to, with the todo shown just above the message in a yellow slice of a legal pad. It's one of the fantastic features of Leopard mail.

The tricky thing you may not notice is that this linking doesn't work if you just press the Todo button to create the todo. You have to select some text in the email message, *then* press the Todo button. Otherwise no link to the original email gets created. Try it, you'll love this feature once you figure out how it works.

Note: there seems to be a bug right now with creating todos on messages stored on IMAP servers. You can try to create a todo on an email message, and it gets created, but when you try to assign a calendar your list of calendars is empty. This is one of the bugs that's supposed to be fixed in the first point release. Anyway, for testing purposes, try adding todos on mail messages stored "On My Mac" first.

Oh, my mistake... it's not a bug... iCal stores a separate list of calendars for each IMAP server. This probably dovetails nicely with CalDAV, but I can see how it might confuse inexperienced users (like me :) ). Just play around with todos on messages "On My Mac" and in POP folders to get started with the mail linking feature.

If you add a To Do as suggested, by right clicking on an email message, then it shows up in two places. One is at the top of the email message itself. The other is in the To Do list. The one in the list has an arrow that you can click on which links directly to the message.

Not exactly a hint is it? This is even one of the features Jobs was demonstrating.

Ctrl+click is just an obvious extra shortcut.

Pushing the button on the toolbar does exactly the same thing when some text in the message is selected.

From my testing, you can select (or simply get the focus) on any message or any text within a message to create a Todos related to that message.

The link back to email is broken. Essentially if you create the todo as above, and don't move the message, it works. As soon as you move it into another folder (say from your inbox) then the link back to the email is broken.

This pretty much sucks. MailTags is much better at doing this, and remembers the email no matter where you store it.
