10.5: Use TextEdit to open Office 2007 documents Apps
I noticed the other day when I received a document from a client that he had sent it in Word 2007 format (.docx); being on a Mac, I obviously don't have immediate access to Word 2007 and because it's never been an issue before, I didn't even have a converter installed.

However, once I'd copied the document to my downloads folder, Finder spawned a preview icon of it immediately and much to my happy surprise, I was able to not only Quick Look it, I was able to open in it TextEdit and work with. Even better, the app also allowed me to save it in the older Word format with no loss of integrity.

Yeah, doesn't work for me. The .docx "files" appear as folders on our Leopard machines. If I attempt to drag it onto the TextEdit icon I get a "...could not be opened" error dialog. Oh well.

Works for me, and it works even better with Pages 2008 which allows you to keep "track changes," or add them.

OpenDocument and Word 2007 Formats
Take advantage of TextEdit support for the Word 2007 and OpenDocument formats for reading and writing.
That hint was already published: on Apple's web site.

I was wondering if I was the only one that saw that.

Some of the hints around here have been really "Duhhhhh" lately.

Except that this is the place where I look for this sort of hint. Sometimes the "duh" type are some of the best hints.

When a classmate sent me a .docx document I had to laugh when Pages '08 and NOT Word 2004 booted up automatically, with no hiccups.

Forcing Word to open it resulted in complete gibberish.
