10.5: Two ways to run a Time Machine backup right now System 10.5
Need to do a Time Machine backup right now? Locate your Time Machine disk in the Finder, right click on the disk, and select Back Up Now from the contextual menu.

[robg adds: You can also control-click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, where you'll find the same option, as well as the ability to browse other Time Machine disks and open Time Machine's preferences.]

This only seems to apply to within the Finder itself. If you have mounted volumes displayed on your desktop, then right clicking on the Time Machine backup disk does not give you a 'Back Up Now' option.

Thanks for that observation...couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for me (when right-clicking on the TM icon on the desktop).

If you are Mac'ing around with only one hand, click and hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock and the popup window will quickly appear with the Back Up Now ooption.

Not sure if this pertains to here or not_

In the later Betas - there was a way to Control the "incremental backup" function - hour - day - week - month - or some variation of this_

In the Final iteration - Apple seems to have taken that ability away_ In the Prefs Pane for TM - there is text indicating that there will be hourly [for 24 hours] - daily [for a month] and weekly backups [for enternity]_

Does anyone know if there is a way to control this - Terminal Commands or something - alter how and when it backs up??
