Install a personal server for iChat to MSN/Yahoo gateway Apps
As many have noted, you can link to a Jabber server to connect iChat to MSN/Yahoo. However, I couldnt find a public Jabber server that supported Yahoo. A bit of searching found that it was very easy to install and configure your own (Openfire), which will automatically run in the background.

A summary of the steps I used:
  1. Download and install OpenFire; make sure you use an embedded database when asked.
  2. Add a user to the system. Use a simple name, e.g. mark.
  3. Go to the Admin page, select Plug-ins, and install the IM Gateway plug-in. (In the Plug-ins tab, there is an available Plug-ins tab, which auto-downloads and installs!)
  4. On the Main menu, select Gateway -> Settings, and enable Yahoo/MSN and others you need. (This also allows you to test.)
  5. Register your user with the gateway. (i.e. associate your Jabber ID with your MSN user ID.) This can be done by either using the Gateway » Registrations tab, or by using psi or other similar Jabber client.
  6. In iChat, add a Jabber account, using username@hostname.local, i.e. mark@technobear.local. Note that you need the full name here, unlike in OpenFire.
Thats it! To change settings at any time go to this page; to start/stop the server, there is a control panel in system config. Note that I tested this on 10.5, and it seems to work fine.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this one.]

I could not get this to work. When I typed in my password it popped up another authentication box. Password didn't work in that box. Same thing for all IM accounts on all services.

try combos of :

username
username@machinename (no domain)
username@machinename.domainname

in my examples:
mark
mark@technobear
mark@technobear.local

there seems to be an oddity that ichat insists in the setup account tab to need domainname i.e. user@machinename.domainname BUT it doesnt on the authenticaion dialog which then populates that tab :)

Worked fine--be careful what accounts/passwords you're using in the particular configs.

worked like a charm for me. you have to enter the password of the local server account when you set it up in iChat. this is a neat solution for me until Apple hopefully gets Yahoo connectivity natively. that would be sweeter still.

This works well. I just want to add some clarifications in addition to the OP's instructions.

Step 2: This is the account that you will enter in iChat. It can be anything you want with any password you want.

Step 4: On this page you will have to enter your msn or Gmail login information but remember to enter the user name you created in step 2 in here.

Step 6: Once you have it set up, I think all accounts you have added in Step 4 will integrate together and appear simultaneously.

Thank you for this info. The Yahoo transport is working fine for me (so far), however, the MSN transport did not discovery my MSN contacts automatically. Do you have to manually add these contacts?

Works fine. Couple questions?

Is there no way to see their actual icon? All I see is a light bulb for all of them.

How would you go about adding a new chat contact to someone from Yahoo or MSN using this new system?

Thanks

You can add users as:

user\40hotmail.com@<service>.<yourdomain>

e.g.

buba\40hotmail.com@msn.mylocaldomain

everthing was setup fine, but ichat cannot connect to host server. not sure what i'm doing wrong or if it's just 10.4.10.

it's pretty straightforward as far as setting up the server and creating your account in ichat.

i've looked at ignite's support info but it's kinda hard to follow.

server name?
Authored by: quee1797 on Tue, Nov 13 2007 at 12:39PM PST
I got this to work perfectly, but with one problem, my local server name changes almost everyday ie I originally set it with the server name comp28.XXXXX.XX.XX but today have been assigned the name comp129.XXXXX.XX.XX

Am I using the wrong server name or is there a solution to my problem?

That's amazing. It works! I re-read the instructions & the comments until it made sense.

Does anyone know of plans to support video chat? Or am I asking too much too soon?

Is there a simple way to configure a single server among two networked computers? It seems sllly to have to install and configure everything twice...

I installed openfire on my desktop machine so I could get a yahoo transport setup with psi and use iChat for icq, aim, yahoo and google talk all at the same time. So on the same desktop machine I just logged into my desktop openfire account as myopenfireusername@localhost (vs using the hostname I'd use from my laptop) and it works peachy! If thats the sorta thing you're talking about.

"5. Register your user with the gateway. (i.e. associate your Jabber ID with your MSN user ID.) This can be done by either using the Gateway » Registrations tab, or by using psi or other similar Jabber client."

I do not understand this procedure. Can you help me?

YEAH! super-fantastical-awesomeness! It works... Can't file transfer or see buddy icons, but otherwise it's pretty flipping apple pie. Any suggestions out there?

Turn off Hotmail notifications?
Authored by: loren_ryter on Wed, Nov 21 2007 at 4:46AM PST
This is a great hint. I use iChat for video chats but missed having access to MSN and Yahoo. Now I can.

I have two problems:

1. It is constantly popping up Hotmail new mail notifications. How can I turn this off?

2. It always asks whether I want to connect to Jabber insecurely. What is at risk here? Is it just the password given to log onto the jabber bridge or something more? Is there a way to make it more secure? If not, is there a way to disable that message?

Thanks.

Great hint. It works for me, although it took me a while to get all the settings correct. I have come to realize that this was mostly due to my ignorance regarding terminology. I found this link that gives a bit more detail in the steps for those (like me) who need it!
