10.5: Google Talk, iChat, and non-admin accounts Apps
I think it is already well known that your old GMail account does not function under 10.5 iChat's Jabber. The solution to this problem is to delete the old Jabber settings and to create new Google talk account within iChat.

The problem is, though, if your account does not have Admin rights. For some reason, only the Admin user can create those (Google Talk and Jabber) accounts. For security purposes, my daily account is not an Admin account. To set up these accounts, I had to give myself Admin rights (in the Accounts System Preferences panel) to fix my Google Talk problem, and then reset them when done.

I use a non-admin account, and I had no trouble setting up my Google Chat account in iChat under Leopard; I didn't need to set up the account as an administrator.

My Gmail Jabber account worked fine after upgrading to Leopard.

I call B.S. on the need for this hint. My google/gmail account works without a hitch in iChat. It makes a Jabber list; all my gmail buddies are there.

Worked first time I tried, "out of the box."

Sorry, this is very much a real bug, and the hint helped me. I just upgraded last week and my only question is: what didn't this upgrade break. Worst apple upgrade ever. [shakes head in disappointment]

Thanks for this hint cnuke. I wasn't able to log in until I deleted my old gmail settings (in iChat) and recreated it as a bona fide Google Talk account.

I don't know about you all - but I just looked up one of the many online "step-by-steps" to setting up a Google Chat Account via Apple Chat_

In Leopard -
What I found was the instructions for pre-Leopard setups_ As I was going thru the steps I got to the one where I select the "jabber account option" and surprise at he very bottom of that pop-up list was an option for a Google Talk Account_

So all I did was select it - enter my user ID [gmail account] and Password and it logged me on - no problem_

So yeah - I have to concur w/ Nipomeroy - this is bullsh!t_
