10.5: A fix for broken video chats and screen sharing System 10.5
This is one of those "huh?" fixes. I'm not sure this is a bug, but it has to do with networking/routing, and it may just be that this is how it works. In any event, after upgrading to 10.5, I could not get the Screen Sharing and iChat video features to work.

I figured out that if you've enabled Internet sharing (on the Sharing pane in System Preferences) -- mine was residual from my 10.4 upgrade -- then Screen Sharing and iChat video chats will not work. Disable it, and they will magically come alive for you!

This fix may not be necessary for everyone, however... I'm sharing my Ethernet port via AirPort and using screen sharing to access a machine that's a peer on the ethernet connection. I have not tested connecting to a machine that is on the AirPort network, however.

I've got an Macbok Pro which I upgraded from tiger to leopard. I've got a friend who has a PPC Mac Mini and we seem unable to make use of the screen sharing feature of ichat. He's using a .mac account, I'm on an older AIM account. We've both enabled screen sharing in the system prefs but for both of us, the screen sharing options are greyed out and neither of us can work out why. anyone have any idea why we can't get it working? we're not on the same network, but ISP's apart, but I thought that ichat was suposed to make it all work.

any help would be appreciated.

As the original post says, you have to turn OFF screen sharing in System Preferences:Sharing. I had screen sharing and file sharing turned on. I turned them both off (everything is off) and now I can conduct a video iChat session from a MacBook across an Airport to T1 in California to wired iMacs in Tennessee. Before the change I could initiate a session usually but it would freeze as soon the other end replied. For a month or so I could not even get a picture on the Video Preview. That required resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU).
