In the Finder, navigate to /System » Library » CoreServices » Archive Utility.app » Contents » Resources, or just copy (triple-click then Command-C) and paste this path into the Finder's Go » Go to Folder box:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app/Contents/Resources/

Once there, double-click on the Archives.prefPane icon. OS X will then ask if you want to install this pane for yourself or all users. Once installed, you can access it via the Others section of System Preferences. You will then have easy access to all of the options available for expanding archives.

[robg adds: One of our queue review team (need a catchy name for this group) point out that you can get to these prefs by simply launching the Archive Utility in the CoreServices folder; it's a regular app with preferences available in its program menu. Having it installed as a preferences panel, though, is quite handy.]

Specifically, what do the "Use archive format" options do? I tried compressing the same folder with each of the different settings and found no difference in the resulting files.

I was hoping one option would allow compression without bringing along the extra OS X bits. I exchange a lot of files with Windows-using developers/clients, and many of them completely freak out when they unzip and see those extra files that begin with ".".

So as much as I would prefer to use the Finder contextual menu, I use the great free utility "CleanArchiver" for zipping -- it allows you to leave out that stuff. (http://www.sopht.jp/en/cleanarchiver/)

This is useful as if fixes things I do all the time. So why isn't this enables by default. I know it's got a couple technical terms, but with Leopard's new help menu that won't be a problem if Apple wrote documentation.

Yes! I can turn off the annoying "reveal in Finder" option. Odd, when the prefpane first opened, that option was off, but the feature has been on for me since installing Leopard. Toggled it on then off and now it works - that is, not revealing in Finder.

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskImages.prefPane

Isn't it better to do a symbolic link:
sudo ln -s /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app/Contents/Resources/Archives.prefPane /Library/PreferencePanes/Archives.prefPane
(That's all one line btw)

I also think it is better to just symlink the PrefPanel, since it will still be current should Apple decide to update it! To create a symlink just for your user use the following command (as usual, all in one line) ln -s /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app/Contents/Resources/Archives.prefPane $HOME/Library/PreferencePanes

Uhm yes... the CMS was nice enough to remove the necessary escaping... ln -s "/System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app/Contents/Resources/Archives.prefPane" "$HOME/Library/PreferencePanes" definitely does the trick, even with whitespace in your path. Pepi

The Special Queue-Review Team, so named because the SQRT is only assembled for gluts of new hints such as occur around a new OS release.

An even easier way to open it, if you have a terminal open:

open -a 'Archive Utility'

These preferences can simply be accessed by opening the Archive Utility.

Archives & DiskImages prefpanes disappear

I added Archives.prefPane to System Preferences a week ago and adjusted a couple of options.

When I noticed a short while ago that one of my preferences was being ignored, I launched System Preferences to verify my settings. "Archives" was no longer in the Other segment. But Achives.prefPane was still in my ~/Library/PreferencePanes folder.

Google quickly led me to this thread. I deleted Archives.prefPane from my PreferencePanes folder and attempted to reinstall Archives.prefPane -- System Preferences crashed. Deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.archiveutility.plist enabled the reinstallation of Archives.prefPane. I also installed DiskImages.prefPane (mentioned earlier in this thread). All appeared to be well, but ...

After restarting Mac OS X 10.5.2 (for an unrelated reason), I discovered the System Preferences Other segment no longer includes Archives or DiskImages. The rest of my Other prefpanes are fine.

Hmmm.
