This hint makes no sense to me. As far as I can tell, there is no connection whatsoever between your location name and the WINS workgroup setting.

Playing with the config, if left on automatic, the workgroup name doesn't seem to persist across location changes (and possibly reboots?) whereas if you create a new Location, it persists with that location.

The file that is altered is /var/run/smb.conf if you want to watch it during location changes.

I agree with diamondsw. This is a stupid place to set the workgroup, especially since in Tiger the workgroups appeared in Network in the sidebar.

However, the name of the configuration file is a useful hint; never thought of looking there.

I do hope Apple pulls the workgroup setting somewhere up to a more accessible place. There have been a ton of posts about this, especially by people who could not find servers on their networks once they upgraded to Leopard.

Note: The name of the location in entirely arbitrary. It's the workgroup setting in the WINS tab that matters. Also, /var/run/smb.conf is a dynamic file, so if you just just edit that file, chances are the changes will go away in the future.

This is actually a bug. You don't need to name the Location the same as the workgroup.

The bug is that the Workgroup editing does not stick if you use the default Automatic location.

What you can do is duplicate the Automatic location (leave it named Automatic Copy), delete the original Automatic, rename Automatic Copy back to Automatic.

Now you should be able to edit the workgroup to your liking as many times as you like and it will stick.

I can't get the new Workgroup name to stick. It's broken. From what I can tell, changing the Workgroup in the WINS tab should modify /var/run/smb.conf, which is where the magic "workgroup =" line in [global] lives. But it doesn't work.

BTW: I always delete the "automatic" location and create specific locations as needed.

The hint is correct. The trick is changing your Location from 'Automatic' to something else (anything else). Once you've done that the 'Workgroup' change will 'stick'

.... but I've deleted the "automatic" location. It's broken if you can't set the workgroup for any arbitrary location.

I actually like the new way the Workgroup and WINS servers are handled!

I use my laptop at several different customers, and have setup locations for most of them. I can now automatically switch Workgroups and WINS servers when switching locations.

PS. also note that the Workgroup won't 'stick' to some locations if you did an upgrade install, and those locations existed before the upgrade. The trick is to duplicate the old location, and enter the Workgroup info. After this you can delete the old location, and rename the new one to match the old.
