When you save a document in Pages, Keynote or Numbers '08, there is an option to "Include preview in document." If you tick this box and save, you can view the entire document as a PDF file on any Mac or PC that can open PDFs.

On a PC, the iWork file will show as a folder. Open it and open the QuickLook folder inside of that. Copy the Preview.pdf file to another location, and then you can open it and view it. On a Mac without iWork '08, control-click on the document and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu, then open the QuickLook folder and open the Preview PDF.

Ready for Leopard

So this is the feature that will enable QuickLook in Leopard. I'm guessing this hint can then apply to Keynote and Numbers as well?

All iWork apps can export to PDF -- why not do that instead, and send the resulting file to your Windows correspondents? That certainly would be much less confusing to them than sending a raw iWork package and have them dig around in it.

I think the point is that if you end up with a Pages file on a machine that lacks iWork (whatever type of machine that is) that by using this hint you can still gain some level of access to that file's contents.

This might explain why it sometimes takes a second or two to save a document in Pages—it's pumping out a PDF file. Sometimes I've ever been presented with a progress bar.

Still, it's a good piece of software.

The hint mentions how to view the Preview PDF file "on a Mac without iWork '08." What about a Mac WITH iWork '08? Shouldn't we able to preview the iWork document in pages?

I tried to drag the whole Pages document onto Preview, expecting that it would automatically open the pdf file, but that didn't happen.

Sorry, in my previous post I meant to say: "If iWork 08 is installed, shouldn't we be able to preview the iWork document in PREVIEW [I erroneously wrote "Pages"], without having to dig into the file's package?"

Not to be critical or anything, but I think that this is pretty useless. The quick look folder contains a small thumbnail, it is not even readable when zoomed. At least on the couple of test documents I have tried.

Sorta, kinda.

I tried this on a Numbers documents. Yes, the PDF was useless for reading BUT it was possible to copy and paste the text. There weren't any tabs to separate the cell contents but the datums were there.

I suppose this could be useful but not nearly as usefull as an exported document.

For Pages this works OK when dealing with documents which are mostly text.

Images, however, seem to set to lowest quality.

If you find yourself on a Windows machine with a Pages document, at least it gives you an option.

I notice that there's also an option to automatically save an older version in Pages. It would be nice if there was a way to automatically save a .doc or .pdf (where image settings would be settable in the preferences and overrideable on a specific document).
