10.4: Quickly set desktop image using Safari 3 Web Browsers
This is a very basic tip, but one i have been using often since the release of the Safari 3 public beta.

Instead of navigating to System Prefrences, or control-clicking on the Desktop to bring up the desktop image menu, simply drag the image you want to use as a desktop image onto the Safari 3 icon. When the image opens, control-click on it and select Use Image as Desktop Picture from the pop-up menu. I find Safari a lot quicker to load, and I find that this makes for a very quick way to change your desktop.

Never knew that... very interesting. I still prefer to use an Automator workflow for even quicker desktop picture changing.

An even faster method would be to browse your image with Firefox (online or off-line), then right-click the image (or CTRL-click) and select "Set As Desktop Background" from the contextual menu...

That's exactly what this hint is suggesting, except with Safari instead of Firefox. :)

Launch Safari? Automator workflow? How often are you changing your desktops anyway?

I was going to post that you could just ctrl-click on an image to do this but then I realised that this functionality on my Mac is provided by Unsanity's FruitMenu which adds a Use As Desktop Picture to the Finder's contextual menu in addition to a couple of other pretty cool things. It's practically worth the $10 for the Gather Selected Items In A New Folder command, which I use all the time.

This works in most applications displaying an accessable picture.
Try it in Preview, and most browser windows.

OK, now - is there a way to disable this? I manage three labs in a school. Our IT folks won't let us use Managed Client so as an alternative we use Parental Controls to keep students from getting into System Prefs, etc. However, they've discovered this trick and keep setting our desktop patterns to other pictures. So can this be turned off? Failing that, is there a way to reset the desktop pattern to the default upon login??? Automator, maybe???

write-protect the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and changing the desktop isn't possible anymore.
