Share internet connection with Wii via AirPort card Network
If you own a Mac with an AirPort card, but don't own a wireless router, here's a way to put the AirPort card to use: use it to share your internet connection with your Wii. First, make sure you're connected to the internet (via something other than the AirPort card, i.e. Ethernet). Also, make sure AirPort is on. Then do the following...

Step One: Turn on Internet Sharing
  1. Go to System Preferences, click on the Sharing icon, then click on the Internet tab.
  2. Change the 'Share your connection from' pop-up to Built-in Ethernet.
  3. Under the 'To computers using' section, check the AirPort box.
  4. Click Airport Options, and enter an easy name such as wii in the Network Name box.
  5. OPTIONAL: Use any password that fits your settings (i.e. 128 bit WEP requires 13 characters).
  6. Click OK if you're on the AirPort Options screen.
  7. Click Start in the Internet Sharing panel.
Step Two: Gather Information
  1. Open Terminal.app and type ifconfig en1.
  2. In the output look for: inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask ....
  3. Take note of the IP address associated with the first inet, negating values after the # (mine was 10.0.2.1; yours may be different).
  4. Type dig. Near the bottom of this output will be SERVER: followed by an IP address. This will be the DNS server address that you will use for your Wii.
  5. OPTIONAL: Use an ASCII/hex converter (such as this one), and enter you password in ASCII to get the %-separated hex-equivalent. This should be 26 hex characters for a 13 ascii character password using 128 bit WEP.

Step Three: Configure the Wii:
  1. Select a connection to edit.
  2. Choose Manual Setup.
  3. Enter the following parameters:
    • SSID: wii (or whatever you chose in step one)
    • Password: enter the hex equivalent of your password
    • Auto-obtain IP Address: No
    • IP Address: Take the first IP address you obtained earlier, and make the last digit different. i.e., mine could be 10.0.2.4 (10.0.2.1 was original)
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default router: The original IP Address, unchanged. (10.0.2.1)
    • Auto-obtain DNS: No
    • Primary DNS: your DNS SERVER from the dig output.
    • Secondary DNS: leave as 000.000.000.000
    • Test your connection at the top of the screen. This should work ... and you should see successful test results from the Wii.
Finally, go to News Channel and check to see if it works ... if not, go back and make sure you followed all the steps.

[robg adds: I can't test this one...]

This is basically the same as the hint for sharing with the DS. In fact, since I already had done it with my DS, I used pretty much the same settings on my Wii (as described in this hint) and it's been working perfectly since day 1.

I'm a little confused. When you enable Internet Sharing, your Mac will start up a DHCP server. The Wii (just like if you had a laptop or something) is capable of finding your network and getting an address without manually entering that info. At least, it worked for me! It found my network, I entered my password, and that was it.

THANK YOU! This worked when other methods (and routers) failed to connect our Wii to our iMac.

As new iMac users, we had to search to find the Terminal.app file. We found the Terminal.app file by clicking on the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, then the Applications icon, then Utilities. The Terminal.app file is under Utilities.

Thanks again, Gidget

Even though I've been using this tip since the start of the fall semester, thanks for posting it. It works well without any problems. I just got a PS3 for Christmas and was curious if it would work in the same way. I can say that it does. You just enter the same values you use for your Wii. I'm sure if there are any Xbox 360 owners out there reading this you can probably do the same thing.

THIS IS FOR INTEL APPLE COMPUTERS WITH AIRPORT USERS ONLY!

Yeah... Umm... Everything you said was true! EXCEPT for the Auto-Obtain IP Address! that is a YES! not a NO! Because I tried to do all that stuff, didnt work... but i tried to Auto-Obtain the IP Address and IT WORKED!,FINALLY! So all Wii and Intel Mac users, use this Guide. but Auto-Obtain your IP Address! Thanks!

Hi there ,

just wanted to let you know that I activated my Ipod touch with your information in this post ...

Without step 3 for the Wii ...

You fill in the SERVER dns on your Ipod Touch/Iphone (optional password) and you can use your airport card (from my MacBookPro) at home to get Internet Ipod Touch ... very nice ...:-)

Thx

Frank

ok got my connection running after following this tutorial:

http://matdonline.free.fr/Wii-connection-with-Airport-MacOSX%20.htm

then abruptly after my imac went into sleep mode, it ceased working with the wii. I followed the steps again, nothing lots of error codes.

Ive just tried this method above and got a few different error codes each time...when i look them up its mainly to do with my firewall, but ive disabled it. Any help?
