Prevent long reply delay in Mail due to certificate checks Apps
About half a year ago, my Mail.app started to become really slow. First I thought it was because I just switched to IMAP, but I noticed that the slowness I experienced was only when pressing Reply to a message after just loading Mail (further replies were not a problem). I had to wait about a minute (meanwhile, Mail was completely unresponsive) before the Reply window showed up. Quite annoying in the long run.

It turned oout that the problem was not caused by IMAP. Around the same time as switching to IMAP, I got a new certificate and thought I might as well turn on certificate validation in Keychain (Preferences > Certificates ) by setting both Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) and Certificate Revocation List for validating certificates to Best Attempt. However, turning both to Off completly removes the long delay in Mail when pressing reply after the first load. It might be obvious for some, but at least not for me, and I wasn't able to find any hints here, so I though I might as well share it.

Setting certificate validation to Off is, of course, a security risk, but since I'm only on rare occasions sending confidentail mails, this isn't a big threat for me (joe average).

[robg adds: Note that these fields default to Off, so you'll only see this slowdown if you've manually changed them.]

I too have the excruciating long delay when clicking reply to some emails within Mail.app, so I was excited to see this hint. However I have not changed the Keychain Preferences and those settings were already set to Off for me. So I'm still trying to figure out why Mail takes so long to generate a reply to some emails.

I have found that - on occasion - a delay can be caused by issues on the .Mac server. Do you have a .Mac mail account?

I do not have a .mac account setup in Mail. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You may already be doing this, but if you hit CMD-0 (zero) you'll bring up Mail's activity window, which can be very helpful in figuring out what's going on during a long delay.

When I click Reply and there is an extensive delay, the Activity Viewer says "Loading Message". The messages are plain text often with more more than a couple of sentences of text so size isn't an issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thank you thank you thank you!
I did not have anything in the Keychain Preferences Certificate tab checked, but I did have 'Search .Mac for Certificates' under the 'General' Tab checked. This was driving me crazy, and now that I've unchecked that, I'm lighting fast.

Wow. Not only did this hint speed up Mail.app it also freed up Safari. Ever since I applied the security update of Nov 30 Safari has just hung .... no spinning pizza wheel of death either ... whenerver I tried to access a secure (https) site. I tried deleting caches and bookmarks and repairing permissions etc for hours. This little hint fixed it instantly.
