CamiTools - Add useful features to Camino Apps

Note: This is the Pick of the Week for May 22nd.

Although I still switch between three browsers (Camino, Firefox, and Safari) with some regularity, I've found lately that Camino gets used more often than the others. Camino itself was a Pick of the Week way back when (November 2002, when it was still called Chimera), and I wrote about verion 1.0 when it was released in February. The articles detail some of the reasons I prefer Camino, one of which is the subject of this week's Pick of the Week -- CamiTools.

CamiTools extends Camino in many interesting and useful ways. After installation (there's an easy-to-use removal tool, too), CamiTools shows up as an additional Preferences tab within Camino. This new preferences tab gives you a ton of additional features; here are some of the most useful:
  • Enable HTTP pipelining (for quicker page loading).
  • Immediate type-and-find, ala Firefox.
  • Ignore 'autocomplete=off' values, to let you save passwords that sites would prefer you don't save
  • A reasonably decent ad blocker for those most-annoying pop-ups and Flash-based ads. It includes a whitelist, too, so you can allow ads from sites you wish to support.
  • Customizable search engines drop-down and default search engine.
  • Customized CSS on a site-by-site basis. I use this to tweak fonts and colors on some of the sites I visit.
There are other features, as well, so check it out if you're a Camino user. It's a well-integrated tool that makes my browsing time more productive.

Note that ad blocking and type-ahead find are built in to Camino; CamiTools only allows them to be configured. The other things are also mostly built-in, but CamiTools gives them an interface (otherwise setting them up would be relatively difficult).

For more configuration, put "about:config" in the URL bar.

To enable HTTP pipelining, enter 'about:config' URL and you will
be able to enable this and other options there.

camino is the best browser I've used so far...
safari has too much compatibility problem, firefox is SLLLOOOOW...

camino is really good but needs some tweaks, with camitools you can configure via GUI an amount of "hidden" features...

the only things that camino lacks is the extensions support... please developers do the trick!

I think Camino really hogs on the CPU. I did a test with www.flashkit.com loaded in both Safari and Camino. Safari had a CPU usage between 3-6 % while Camino stayed around 20-25%. Is there a way to tweak this?

I used camino a long time ago (I have version 0.8.2) but I moved back to safari, and then to Firefox when the autofill extension became (sort of) available for 1.5. Is there anything similar (or, hopefully better) for camino?

yes, Camino has an autofill now (Edit/Fill form) using your Adress Book data.
