Use advanced Red-Eye and Retouch tools in iPhoto6 Apps
Use this super-secret method to access some super-secret advanced editing modes in iPhoto6:
  1. Enter edit mode for any image.
  2. Select the Retouch or Red Eye tool.
  3. Press Caps Lock, Control, and 9 at the same time, then release them.
  4. Press Tab. If you activated the Red Eye tool, the small cross hairs will be replaced with a large oval. If you were using the Retouch tool, your cursor is now a small dotted circle with "0.50 { }" below it.
  5. For either tool, press the "[" and "]" keys to alter the size of the area the brush covers.
[robg adds: In testing this hint, I found a couple of other tidbits. First, the Retouch tool has a Lighten mode -- activate it by hitting Tab a second time. Second, when you're in the Retouch mode, you can use the "{" and "}" keys (as noted by the cryptic label) to change the intensity of the retouch effect. Crank it to 1, and it's very strong; at .10, it's barely noticeable. Here's what each of the edit cursors looks like:

(I also recorded a short movie showing each cursor being resized.)

If you edit in a separate window, then this mode will be reset each time you enter edit mode. If you edit in the same window, though, it will remain enabled until you quit iPhoto. I found it easiest to press and hold Control, then add Caps Lock (hold it down), and then press and release 9. After that, Tab should cycle the tool. Make sure you have one of the two edit tools selected first, or nothing will happen.]

Great find!

I wonder what kind of keyboard-mashing finger-twisting caused this :) It's not the usual too-fast-for-the-computer kind of find

I found this hack stayed in place until I restarted iPhoto. I didn't need to do the ctrl+caps+kp9 each time.

Nice hint - I like this quirky things.... good for "did you know that.." conversations in the pub :-)

In portuguese keyboard the [ is alt-8 and the ] is alt-9 though it's not marked on the keyboard, maybe in the french layout the keys are the same!

I see that others mention non-US locales.... I'm running English (UK) English. Maybe that might make a difference?

I figured it out (and modified the original hint). If you edit in a separate window, then the advanced mode will be disabled each time you edit an image.

But if you edit in the main window, then it does indeed persist between edits.

Has anyone been able to find a way to have these available all the time without going through the steps each time? Could an Apple Script or Automater be used? Thanks for any info. JB

Two Questions
Authored by: pediddle on Mon, May 8 2006 at 11:44AM PDT
(1) How in the world do you go about finding a trick like this? A contact on the iPhoto team? Reverse engineering the binary?

(2) These features seem very useful. Although the interface is a little clumsy (and maybe this answers my own question), why wouldn't Apple provide these features for everyone?

Two Questions
Authored by: CharlieRock on Tue, May 9 2006 at 11:28AM PDT
1. I got really frustrated with the oversized retouch tool so I searched for "resize iphoto retouch tool" in the apple forums.

2. I have no clue.

Cool hint. I'm hope that this will eventually make it into an actual release.

I have found a repeatable bug though. Once in the "super-secret advanced editing mode" if you type <shift>-<tab> twice iPhoto will crash. Perhaps this and other bugs have thus far prevented a final release of this functionality.

Yep, on a French keyboard, just pressing Tab bring up these tools. CTRL-Caps lock-9 don't have any effect. Unfortunately, I don't know how to change the size and intensity of the tools since on a French keyboard, there are no dedicated [ and ] and { and } keys. Any ideas?

How do the french write code then? {} are widely used in programming languages. Maybe some alt-combination (check keyboard viewer).

Please RE-READ!

If you write code how do you do that if you don't understand what you read?

He said "dedicated"! On the french keyboard you need to use the modifiers to access { and [...

Capicce?

I have an Australian keyboard and you just have to press the tab key to get to the advanced tools. Control, caps lock and keyboard 9 don't do anything. Also the [ and ] keys alter the size of the tool.

On my Powerbook with a Danish keyboard, TAB is also the happy-key that makes things happen. CTRL-CAPS-kp9 produces absolutely nothing.
My iPhoto is version 6.0.2.

I switch my keyboard layout to "U.S." to be able to adjust the size and intensity of the secret tools.

(International users will know how to switch keyboard layouts, but just in case: System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu -> Select layouts. For fast switching turn on "Show input menu in menu bar".)

Is the red-eye fix still green?

I hated that they changed from black - a green pupil looks good for people with blue eyes, but on brown eyed people they look freaky.

Just got my MAC OSX and having a massive blue dot when I tried to use red eye was driving me absolutely nuts. They say MAC is intuitive..so why would they make it a top secret how to reduce the size of the red eye? GRRR! Anyway, thanks very much for that. You saved me hours more frustration!

I just replaced my G4 AL PowerBook with a Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro. Now these advanced iPhoto tools are no longer working. Has anyone been able to get them to work?

I also have a MBP C2D and had problems. I was able to enter the advanced editing by selecting an editing tool, turning on caps lock (let go), then pressing ctrl and 9. Resize the pointer with '[' and ']'.

What about iPhoto '09?
Authored by: Krioni on Thu, Mar 26 2009 at 12:00PM PDT
I've noticed that, while iPhoto '09 has incorporated some of these advanced features, it still leaves something to be desired. The fact that the red-eye tool is only 100% black and with sharp edges is disappointing. I'm hoping there is an advanced mode in it that allows fuzzy edges and other shades of color that won't make people look like dolls with button eyes.

Anyone found this?
