10.4: Enable Remote Desktop.app on Intel Macs Apps
Tiger only hintThis Apple note states that ARD admin ("Remote Desktop.app") does not work on Intel Macs. A solution has been circulated on several admin lists, however:

After removing ARD client components from the admin computer and restarting, Remote Desktop.app will repair itself, quit, then if you relaunch it, most features (including viewing and controlling) seem to work fine. The minimum that needs to be removed is ARDAgent.app from /System -> Library -> CoreServices -> RemoteManagement.

A more complete list to remove is reported by some as:
  • /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu
  • /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/
  • /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ARDPref.prefPane
  • /System/Library/StartupItems/RemoteDesktopAgent/
It is unlikely that the admin computer could then be accessed from another copy of Remote Desktop.app, but most admin features have been working fine.

WARNING

You need to be very careful trying to get this to work.

1) DO NOT DELETE /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement You need the SPECIAL version of ARDAgent that comes with the intel mac.

2) Set ARDAgent to use roseta. (get info on the file) /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app

You beat me to it! A guy at work found this on the Apple Discussion Forums, and we tried it on several macs and it works as described.

Every feature I've tried so far works as it's supposed to, and it doesn't seem to be any slower under Rosetta on a 20" iMac then it was on my 1.5 GHz 12" PB.

ONLY ARDAgent.app needs to be moved or renamed

You do NOT need to remove ANYTHING but ARDAgent.app.

The second list is not more "complete"; it's just instructions on how to remove the whole client. The whole client does NOT need to be moved/renamed; only /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app

For me, getting info on ARDAgent and checking the box for "Open in Rosetta" seems to have been sufficient- I still have the Universal Binary of ARDAgent 2.2.1 installed, and ARD 2.2 (7C22) works for me.

This worked great for me! Just check that little box, and you are in business.

Much better than throwing away or moving files.

You actually don't need to remove anything at all. Turn off Remote Access in system prefs if it's on. Set it to open with Rosetta, and turn it back on. That's it.

10.4:Remote Desktop VNC Access

Anyone been able to access an Intel Mac with VNC that is running ARD with VNC enabled. Just using the ARD software installed on my Mac Mini (Intel) with the vnc enabled, no VNC server running other than ARD.

Yes, works like a charm! I did have to leave my VNC session to draw using native colors (DO NOT USE 8-Bit) as the lower color resolution draws about 1/100 the screen then kraps out.

Note: If you later install ARD 3.0, like I just did, it won't work. You will need to go in and uncheck "Open with Rosetta" and then everything will be peachy.

Note that this hint no longer seems to work after the release of Security Update 2006-003

I'd been using ARD2.2 with the above-mentioned workaround on an Intel iMac. I did a software update to install the 2006-003 security patches, and now when I try and run ARD2.x admin, my machine locks up/hangs so spectacularly that the only escape is by holding down the power button and starting again. Trying to fix permissions, re-implement the workaround, etc has not helped.

mbd, did you discover a resolution for this? I'm having the exact same problem since the last time I ran Software Update. ARD launches, then everything locks up. I can move the cursor but no applications respond to anything and I have to hard reboot.

Sorry to reply to this seven months after it was asked - no, I didn't find a resolution that allowed me to still use ARD2.x - I ended up upgrading to ARD3.x (which I'm guessing is what most people ended up having to do).

It is a separate piece of commercial software. It does not come on the computer.
