Adjust visible hours in iCal via the scroll wheel Apps
Forgive me if this has been posted, but I am relatively new to iCal, having recently switched from Now Up-to-Date for reasons off-topic to this post.

I set up my iCal prefs to view 24 hours in the Week view, and was happy until I wanted to change it to a more zoomed-in level. Having just stumbled upon the Firefox text zoom feature, I decided to try the same thing in iCal to Zoom the view, but, alas, it didn't work.

When I tried a different modifier, however, voila! Holding down the Option key while moving the scroll wheel up will zoom the viewable hours out (see more hours in a view), while scrolling down will zoom the viewable hours in (closer view of your calendar). This also works in Day view. Most excellent!

[robg adds: This handy timesaver saves a trip to the Preferences, as it sets the value for the "Show nn hours at a time" pop-up you'll find there.]

And (maybe it goes without saying that) trackpad users can do Option-two-fingers up and down.

Maybe it should go without saying, but some of us appreciate the reminder.

I like to thank folks who post tips here that I personally benefit from. Thanks so much for taking the time to submit this hint! I'll be using it often. You've saved me some time -- I also appreciate the linked reference to the Firefox hint, which is just as helpful for me.

Great hint! But I cannot understand why I didn't try it myself first...

I wish there was a standard to which modifier key one should hold down to get the zoom effect. My four most used programs have three different modifier keys.

ical - option
Firefox - command
Word and Excel - Ctrl

and latlely - WoW, no key....

In general I think option is the right modifier for this type of modification.

Command is for initiating menu shortcuts. Apple breaks this in DVD player.
Control is for contextual menus.
Option brings alternate functions to buttons and actions. Control is also used in this way when combined with shortcuts, but almost always with Command.
