QE2D in 10.4.4 is buggy and kernel panic-prone like QE2D in previous Mac OS versions, so use it at your own risk.

I did this a week ago, and my Mac began to kernel panic after only 2 minutes after reboot.

Since I disabled Q2Extreme, no KP anymore… So this tip is indeed a bad one ;-)

I am still surprised that this long after the release of tiger that no one has come up with a way to turn on the waterdrop effect in dashboard on unsupported Macs.

I use many unsupported effects as screensavers that I make with Quartz Composer and they work just fine.

I agree. I would love to know how to enable the water drop effect. I just want to see my machine attempt it!

The water drop effect requires pixel shaders (or vertex shaders, or one of those things) on the graphics card. It refuses to attempt to do the effect in software - I don't know if it's because they simply think it would look bad, or if it's because (and this I think is likely) the effect is dependent on the composite of everything beneath the ripple, and doing it in software would require asking the graphics card to composite all the windows below it, pass that result back to the CPU so it can do the ripple, then passing that result back to the GPU so it can continue compositing the windows. And I would be quite surprised if this was an operation that was even supported.

So basically, if you gfx card doesn't have the support required to render the water drop, there is no way to force it in software.

On my Mac at home, I had the water effect until I updated to 10.4.4... now I no longer have it. :(

Quartz 2d Extreme still works in 10.4.6
And as I discovered today it works flawlessly on my Intel Mac mini C2 (permanently enabled). Though I can't see a difference in the way the graphics are composed as the mini is already very snappy. Does anyone know how to best demonstrate the powers of Q-2D-E?

WARNING! Do NOT enable it!

I enabled it and got a kernel panic within 2 minutes after reboot. Not even time enough to check if it shows any improvement.

System: MacOS X 10.4.8, G5/Dual 2.5GHz, ATI Radeon X800XT
