How to remove iDisk after .Mac account expires System
Once your .Mac account has expired, the iDisk will remain on the Desktop. I tried getting rid of it, to no avail, until I was instructed by .Mac support to explicitly remove my name and password information from the .Mac System Preferences pane.

Note that once your iDisk is deactivated as described above, you get an image with whatever was stored on it; you are free to copy or delete that data as you wish.

Hope this helps someone else; the solution was not obvious to me.

I had the same problem, and was given the same solution. However, I was NOT told that this would have other effects, and this is the reason for my response.

Removing .mac login details did indeed remove the iDisk, but it also removed the .mac mail account in Mail.app. Fortunately, I had cleared out the email that I required, as there were no traces of the few remaining messages anywhere.

So if you are removing your desktop iDisk, clear out your mail.app account first!

Does this also remove your iChat login? Supposedly, one can sign up for the .Mac trial, and when it expires, you keep your iChat login. I've been meaning to do this, but if I 'clean up' the iDisk and then lose the iChat login, there's no point, unless I put up with the dead iDisk on my desktop.

My .mac login still works fine with iChat even though I haven't had a .mac account for a couple years now.

Thank you! I've tried to do this a couple of times without figuring out how. With this hint I just got rid of the iDisk, and my iChat account was not effected. (I just had to reenter my login password.) Great!

I don't know if this will affect ichat or not for .mac accounts.

However if it does, keep in mind that you can use iChat with other accounts as well - like AIM - and still be able to communicate with others on it. (even if the others are using .mac)

Thanks! I haven't used the .mac in well over a year for anything.

I'm glad to finally get that icon off of my desktop. =)
