DockStar - More detailed counts for new Mail messages Pick of the Week

Ever been frustrated with Mail's simplistic new message count in its Dock icon? You get one number, representing only the messages in your inbox. But if you use rules to filter messages, you probably have unread mail in a number of folders, too. Enter DockStar. This Mail plug-in lets you view the unread count for up to five different mailboxes in Mail. I'm on a number of mailing lists, and I find this little tool is quite helpful for tracking new activity on four of them (in addition to my main inbox).

The UI is quite intuitive, though I found the color-changing wheels to be somewhat tricky to use -- I'd love to see a pop-up for the standard color picker instead. But beyond that, it's well thought out, and you can even pick from a set of different graphics for each badge's background. Dan Frakes wrote about DockStar in this week's Mac Gems article, and he's got a lot more detail if you're interested.

LOL! Dan Frakes has 1367 unread messages in his Inbox, but only 7 of them are worth being distinguished.

Why Not MailEnhancer?

"Up to 5 mailboxes"?

I prefer MailEnhancer which not only is freeware, but shows the total new message count across all folders. 10.2.x and up.

Why Not Read the Fine Article?

If you read the Frakes article in Macworld, you'd note that one can set Mail Dock to count all the unread messages in all mailboxes, and still report 4 individual mailboxes as well. Or one could have 5 separate mailboxes reported.

And Frakes says he has replaced MailEnhancer's dock reporting functionality with Mail Dock, FWIW.

Why Not MailEnhancer?

I can't even get MailEnhancer to install. Mail always says it isn't 10.4 compatible, no matter what I try to do to install it.

MailEnhancer does work with Tiger. The installation process is slightly different...

I find Mail Appetizer most useful for mail notifications.

I love Mail Appetizer, and it's great that the developer is working the Tiger beta so diligently.

Slightly off-topic

I am very happy that Mail does not show unread e-mails filtered into subfolders in its Dock icon. I usually always bring Mail to the foreground whenever I see the red symbol. This is disrupting my work already quite badly, so I have filtered all types of e-mail which is only informative and not something I might have to react to (like newsletter, invitation to seminars, general announcements, notices from discussion forums I monitor, etc.) into folders. This is mainly not for organisatorial purpose, for that the search function in Mail is sufficient, but to keep all less important and less urgent e-mail from disrupting my work.
