10.4: Watch for lost Spotlight comments with file renamers Apps
Tiger only hintI have been spending hours putting specific metadata into the Spotlight Comments box via the Get Info window. In 10.3, I often used R-Name to rename my photo files with the year of the photo at the beginning of the filename. So I tried R-name to change the year in 10.4, and I was shocked to find that it erased all of my Spotlight comments!! Thankfully, I realized this had happened after modifying only one folder of archived photos, and not globally over my hundreds of annotated files!

Generic warning: Before using your favorite renaming utility in 10.4, try renaming a duplicate folder to make sure that it leaves all comments intact! Please post a comment regarding your favorite renaming utility and tell us if it plays nice or not.

Why not use Automator?

Simply set up a quick workflow which ask for a folder, gets the contents of that folder, and renames the folder with the year in front of the text. Three actions is all it needs, and the spotlight comments are retained (I just tested that to make sure).

This really is the easiest way to do it, I think. I've tried several file renaming programs, and each one has been deficient in some way to me. With Automator, I just made my own file renamers and saved them as Finder Plugins. I'm no programmer, and it was very easy to do. Now I just Control-Click on whatever I want to rename and select "Rename Selected Items..." from the Automator submenu. The dialog box that comes up lets me manipulate the items just about any way I want to.

Did you (in the Terminal) try
mdls filename | grep FinderComment
?

I noticed that the Get-Info dialog doesn't display the Spotlight Comment I had entered some time ago ... but the information is still there - in the kMDItemFinderComment field.
And if I make a SmartFolder and let it search the SpotlightComment field it DOES find the file(s) - although the file doesn't seem to have a SL comment.

Same problem also occurs for A Better Finder Rename 6.8.5.

A Better Finder Rename should have an option to choose between a 'fast' way and a 'safe' way to rename files. The former removes metadata, while the latter uses the Finder (I think that's what it says) does not.

I can't find the option in GraphicConverter at the moment, but it has one to do renames via the Finder and keep the comments. In response to:
And if we do not check the "Rename via Finder" tickbox, any Finder comments we may have will be deleted?
Thorsten (the author) wrote this:
yes, because I use the normal Apple toolbox calls for rename. Which ignore the finder comment.
While I love the concept of comments I've always found them flakey and prone to getting lost.
