10.4: Preview link URLs in Mail.app 2.0 Apps
Tiger only hintThe new Mail.app adds the much-needed ability to see the actual URL of a link in a mail message. Just hover your mouse cursor over a suspicious link to see the actual URL in a tooltip.

It's regrettably not as obvious as Safari's status bar, nor does it seem to be documented anywhere, but it's a small defense against popular phishing tricks. I suppose Apple hopes everyone will just happen to notice it before they go handing over their eBay account information.

I think Mail.app should display a warning if a link address disagrees with the link text (if the link text looks like a URL).

For example, something like

<a href="http://scammersite.cx">http://www.paypal.com</a>
should be flagged as a misleading link. I (mostly) don't worry about my mom getting viruses on OS X, but I do worry about her falling prey to phishing, and both education and software should help prevent it.

If you think this is an important security feature for Mail.app, let Apple know: http://bugreport.apple.com

10.4 has made checking the URL easier but in 10.3 you were still able to click and hold the URL and it would give you a preview when you drag it away without starting a new message or going to the website .
