10.4: Use Spotlight to find music on your iPod System 10.4
Tiger only hintI discovered this by accident. Spotlight will index your iPod, but not your music files. But using the Terminal, you can force it to index music with the following command:
 sudo mdimport -f /Volumes/your_iPod/iPod_control/
After you have indexed your iPod music, search for your music and view it in the Spotlight window. Double-click on a track of your choice and it will be imported into your iTunes music library and copied to your Mac's iTunes Music folder.

Not necessarily the easiest or most elegant solution to transfer music from iPod to Mac, but interesting that it is now rather trivial from the OS (Ok, it was previously easy to copy using the Terminal, but less easy to find what you wanted to copy).

if i add songs to my iPod, do i have to run the command again or is it live-updated?

the trick is, you have to pick the ones without the hoedowns.

Unfortunately it's a manual reindex job. Or schedule the command to be run depending on how often you dump music onto your iPod...

couldn't you just tar up the entire ipod volume and dump it on your hard drive somewhere, then do a mass import into your itunes library? Then you could weed out the songs you don't want.. my opinion is that it's better to have everything and remove some stuff than to selectively pick and end up missing something.

Spodlight is quite the delicious hack. The developer is interested in your ideas, so use it and give him feedback. Also, it appears that Apple can't really shut down this sort of indexing since mdimport is crucial to Spotlight. My concern is that they might see this as leading to file-sharing via iPod. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut ;)

Take off the tin foil hat.

I really don't think that it's going to be a problem. Apps like Senuti haven't been shut down, and the closest thing to it which was shut down was the plugin which made iTunes do the copy process, which probably got a little too close to making Apple liable. You're right though, they can't "shut it down", just like they can't shut down cp -R /Volumes/iPod ~/Desktop. There is only so far they can go to keep people from doing things which could be construed as illegal, and indexing hidden files on an iPod is nowhere near passing that line.

Apple could hardwire the _iPod_Control folder as a no-index folder. I doubt they would, but it is certainly possible.

Just wondering... Couldn't this be combined with those Smart Folders thingie in Tiger (which unfortunatly I don't have yet :/ ).

Command - Apple - N button according to the things I'm reading.

Should save the search results. So just have spotlight display everything it finds in those "Pod control sub dirs" as an own folder...

Anyone getting what I mean?
