10.4: Change the Dashboard shelf's background image System 10.4
Tiger only hintIn 10.4, when you press the '+' symbol in the bottom left corner while Dashboard is active, the Dashboard shelf slides up into view containing all your widgets. The background image used for the shelf can be found here:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/perf.png
You can replace this image with any PNG image you like and it'll be tiled, or you can use a single, full width image. The shelf is 118 pixels high and as wide as your monitor (1024 pixels in my case), so you can use those dimensions to construct your own shelf background. Also in the same directory are the images for the next and previous arrows on the shelf.

Go be creative!

[robg adds: As seen below, I replaced this image with a non-perforated gradient background, and I'm now a much happier Dashboard user. It's not that I mind the perforations all that much, but they were a bit too strong for regular viewing.

The bottom area (where the widget names appear) will need to be lighter in color for best results, as the text is both light and shadowed. The height of the text area is 14 pixels. Note also that you do not need to make your PNG file the full width of your monitor -- the image will repeat horizontally if it's not full-width. I used a tiny 2KB PNG to create the above full shelf background.]

Has anyone found a hint dealing with this? I would LOVE to know how to change the whole overlay opacity myself, but haven't found how to do it yet.

Well, there is a way to do this. I've written a screensaver module, DashSaver, which displays the dashboard and has an optional color/opacity background.

Now set your F12 and/or screen corner to activate your screensaver instead of your dashboard.

10.4: Change the Dashboard shelf's background image

I tried this and it asked me for my admin password. So I entered it and then got the message:

the operation cannot be completed because because you do not have sufficient priveleges for "perf.png".

so what do I do?
can i just change the permissions for that one file or what?
thanks

change into the directory in your terminal.

cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources

then issue the command

sudo mv perf.png perf.png.orig <press enter>
<enter your admin password>

Then issue this command assuming your replacment pert.png is on your desktop

sudo mv /Users/yourname/Desktop/pert.png .

<press enter>

Don't forget the . at the end of the command.

Logout/in or kill dock to reload

Remember to logout/in to reload Dashboard and see the effect of a replaced background.

Or, because Dashboard is managed by the Dock, kill the Dock:-)

10.4: loxation of dock files?

I"d like to change the color and opacity of my dock. Does anybody know where the equivalent files for the dock are found? I know clear dock will do this, but I don't want to install APE.

ClearDock does this, and I love the look.

I also used that Dashboard background for the desktop and it is beautiful.

You nitwit. He just said NO ClearDock and NO APE! I'm interested in an Unsanity-free convenient way to manage dock opacity myself.

As someone who has been using APE since, I dunno, Jaguar, on various different Powerbooks with no problem and a whole lot of pleasure and ease of use . . .not to be cruel, but I got no sympathy for the knee-jerk anti-APErs. No ClearDock. Ouch. That means you got black dock arrows. You poor thing.

They're configurable, ya know. Exclude and include, fancy stuff like that.

Tinkertool doesn't make the dock transparent

Tinkertool will add some transparent icons to the dock but it does not make the dock transparent.

Perhaps we need to petition Free Range Mac to update TransparentDock. It worked beautifully up until Tiger, with no APE needed.
