Holding Pattern - A window seat for everyone Pick of the Week

I am not a huge user of screensavers; my Macs are usually either awake and working for me, the screen has been dimmed if idle for a few minutes, or they're in sleep mode. In fact, I have but one third-party screensaver installed on my system, and it's this one.

I'm not much for most of airline travel -- I dislike the drive to the airport, the parking hassles, the check-in and security process, the waiting, the relatively cramped cabins ... but I do enjoy the actual flight, once it's started and assuming I've managed to snag a window seat. I love watching the planet go by from 35,000 feet; it makes the trip go faster, and there are some great sights to be seen from above (flying over the Grand Canyon into Phoenix, for example).

Enter Holding Pattern, an "out the airliner's window" screensaver. Now you can have those same views without the travel hassles ... OK, not quite the same :). As you sit in your virtual window seat, you'll see various scenery drifting by below, as you can see in the short (1.9MB) movie linked at left (click the photo to play). There's a wide variety of scenery, as well as varied seats within the airplane. And the flights do eventually go somewhere, though you'll have to let the saver play for quite a while to see the end result.

If you're not using an LCD screen, then Holding Pattern may not be the best screensaver -- there are parts of the image (sometimes big parts) that are fixed (the window, a wing, etc.) for a few minutes at a time. It shouldn't be long enough to cause any burn in, but ideally, a screensaver wouldn't have any fixed objects on the screen.

More "screen entertainment" than pure screensaver, Holding Pattern will let you see some nice landscapes drifting by when your Mac's idle ... and it's free! (There is a $200 limited edition that includes even more imagery and other niceties, if you're interested in directly supporting the developers.)

Runs like crap on my ibook 12" 800 even in "normal" mode. I'll try it on my P4 3.2 and see if it's better there since the idea is cool.

I have run this for a while on my 1 Ghz PowerBook as well as my G5. No problems in performance.

I thought "burn ins" on CRT and VGA quality monitors were a myth. Is it really possible to burn an image into the screen on a monitor that was made in say the last 5 years?

Definitely not a myth. I have some old server monitors that used to run 24/7 and the burn-in is so clear you can read the icons on the desktop with the monitor off.

I have a 17-inch Trinitron that was left on at the OS X login screen. You can plainly see it when the monitor is off.

It's not a myth, but it's MUCH harder to do with more recent monitors. Leave a monitor on with the same image on screen day after day, for months at a time and it'll happen.

In the old days it could take only a few weeks for burn in to occur.

Another example of CRT burn-in is the monitors on bank machines (ATMs) where the bank's logo is clearly burned into the screen.

One wonders why these displays don't use motion-intensive graphics? I can't imagine it would really be that hard or confusing for use.

I mean, come on, put my checking fee to use here!

I just like using a folder of photos from "Astromony Picture of the Day" in the default screensaver options.

I like http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software/Fireflies.html
It combines the beauty of Flurry and my fascination with flocking simulations.

Fluid http://www.concepthouse.com/products/Fluid/
is pretty, but i takes even more CPU/graphics card resources.

Particles is simple but neat, and doesn't hog the CPU. www.alltooflat.com

There's also one that searches google and displays the resulting images, but I forgot the name.

All are free of charge, last time i checked.

Or.... if they play like crap as a screen saver, you can:

Open the package contents and play the flash video files in your web browser or in quicktime or whatever else and they play much better.

Reminds me of Loops screensavers
Authored by: StereoTotal on Tue, Feb 8 2005 at 7:31PM PST
About a year ago I downloaded some screensavers branded as "Loops." They were fun to watch, and included a washing machine, a fireplace, a babbling brook and an underwater scene. However, I didn't use them for very long because they were constantly accessing the hard disk while they ran. Save the monitor at the expense of the hard drive? No thank you.

Just an update on LOOPS. I've made LOOPS 2.1.1 cache the whole movie in RAM so it does not access the disk anymore...

Box for 6 screensavers
Authored by: melvinwalker on Wed, Feb 9 2005 at 12:20PM PST
There was a screensaver that I remember, where you could select 6 other screen savers and run them on the sides of a box that rotated. Now that Macs are finally powerful enough to run that, :-) I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The old Black/White tubes were the most easily burnt in. But CRTs fade after a while, so it's actually better to use Energy Saver to turn off the screen.
