Send long SMS with Address Book via Bluetooth Apps
I have searched a long time for a way to send long SMS (more than a 160 characters) from the Address Book and my SonyEricsson T68. This is something that should have been possible from start in Address Book, I believe. There are other apps that support this, but I already have the Address Book launched at startup, and I do want yet another small program running adding to my long list of startup programs.

I discovered the following solution after finding out that you can send other GSM generic codes (dont know if that's the right word for it) like *t# (and a space before the actual message), which will return you a SMS upon succesful delivery (nice if you're not sure wether the whole SMS through Bluetooth actually works). You can do that with messages from your phone as well, and I believe these codes are the same on every GSM-net in the world.

When you recieve a long SMS from a friend, and you are connected to the Address Book over Bluetooth, two messages pop up from the Address Book with some gibberish code in the beginning of each message. The code I got from the first pop-up is é@ø¿!, and the next pop-up was é@ø¿!¡@. As I said, I believe these codes are the same all over the world, but you can test by sending yourself a long message and looking at the code.

If you the write the first code in the start of the "first" message, and the second code in the start of the next, they will be recieved as one long message on the reciever's end upon delivery of the second SMS. This also means that you can't just use the code if the message is under the normal 160 characters, as it will not be sent at all.

There's probably a third code if the SMS spans across three messages, but I haven't tested for that yet.

[robg adds: Any typos in the above codes are probably my fault; I can't test this one, though, so someone will have to let me know if they work as described or not.]

To test this I basically just sat there with my phone mashing my finger across the keys to generate a sufficiently long message, then sent it to myself while connected to my iBook via BT. The following are the codes that begin each message (there are 3):

é@ø@0[newline]@
é@ø@0¡@
é@ø@0¿@

*t# doesn't seem to work for me :(

Hi!

Great hint ! I'm not keen on sending large messages... but I was looking
for a method to get a reception report also when sending through AB...

Anyways, *t# didn't work.. it's just postfixed to the sms I send.
Is this a problem with german GSM providers, or did I do something wrong ?

My test message looks like this "*t# hello" and I receive "*t# hello" and no
report at all ;)

I'm using a SE T610.

Thanks ;)

Ok.... I had a ne search running. The code differs between the different gsm nets.

Maybe there's a more comfortable way to send long messages ? according to this (german) page (and of course several others, too) there are human readable and thus rememberable codes to send large messages, too.

I got similar codes:
é@øp3 @ for the first
é@øp3¡@ for the second
é@øp3¿@ for the third
This is for a German GSM net. So maybe it isn't the same for every net.

Now I'm aware the hint's Anonymous author doesn't want to touch anything but Address Book but I can't resist giving a plug to BluePhoneElite (free):

Besides long SMS, this will give you information on your phone's battery charge level and reception and current network.

My favorite feature is that it can also display older SMS messages stored on your phone, not just those which came while your phone was paired.

I am the author of this hint - sorry about the anonymous - it was my first hint suggestion.

@wrzlbrnft
Okay it seems the codes are NOT the same for all GSM-providers around the world. Im sure you can call you're provider and ask for the code to your network.
It would be great if the codes were a bit more memorable - I think i'll call my provider and find out if there are easyer codes.

@fds
I have never heard of that program - i'll check it out. Seems like it has alot of nice features.

Can anyone answer as to why it's so hard now to find a free SMS texting service in the UK?
Is the business model of UK providers wildly different to those in the US or the rest of the world or what?
It used to be that you could visit a website and type your message in and send it to a mobile. Now you have to jump through hoops typing in numbers from images or pay a subscription.
I was just looking into writing some scripts which will alert me via SMS whenever one of my websites goes down - before the client informs me - but I have so far found no way to send the SMS message. I'm considering subscribing to a service found on google but I can't test any scripts until I sign up so I have no idea if they are going to work.

So, I said ... well, I can't actually remember exactly what I said. But it was one of the most enormously cruel and frighteningly witty put downs ever.

If your provider is Orange this can be easily accomplished using their free email2sms service which can be activated via their website.

Long SMS is a handset feature, not a network feature. The codes vary depending on the manufacturer and model of handset.
