Additional simple tips to make Safari faster Web Browsers

I was having a problem with the spinning beach ball and slow page loads in Safari, and after searching a bunch of forums, found two things that seemed to help:
  1. Delete all your autofill entries from time to time. do this by going to Safari preferences, Autofill button, and then click the "Edit..." button for the "Other forms" box. In the next window that appears, just click Remove All.

  2. Turn off all the languages you don't need. In the Finder, select the Safari application and do a Get Info (Command-I), click "Languages," and uncheck all the languages you don't need.
[robg adds: We've now run quite a few Safari speed hints ... to summarize, it appears you can maximize Safari's speed by also disabling JavaScript and (as seen here yesterday) removing cached FavIcons. In addition, you can also speed up your bookmarks menu.]

This "turn off languages" tip is interesting--I hadn't noticed that was in the info boxes for applications (new under Panther?). Just to be clear: I'm assuming this removes the other-language interface, not the ability to handle the display of those languages. Right?

I hadn't noticed that before either.

But I doubt it makes anything faster - these are just localization files containing menus and dialogs. Applications only load one such set of files when they launch.

Languages info at least since 10.1

The Languages selection in Get Info has been available much longer than Panther. The cool accessory Pic2Icon has had Pig Latin available there since its last revision in May 2002.

Great bunch of Safari speed-up hints. Hopefully someone will start the ball rolling with similar hints for the other popular browsers as well...particularly Firefox and OmniWeb 5.0 beta.

I suggest using pithhelmet for sites such as ign.com which suffer from the beachball effect. For ign.com I simply block everything coming from scripts.snowball.com

Will removing the Autofill disable my ability to autofill for those sites that I visit frequently, or "forget" usernames/passwords to sites?

No you will not lose your passwords and usernames. This is stored under the user name and passwords section. The "Other forms" include all forms that you filled out of the lengthier type such as shipping address, advance search pages with lots of options that sort of thing. If you are concerned about not having the autofill you can selectively remove all the sites you don't know and leave the ones you use often.
