All macosxhints Panther hints [431 total!] System

This hint contains all currently published 10.3 (Panther) hints on macosxhints.com. Use Command-clicks to open the hints in new tabs in Safari, Mozilla, etc. for easy browsing. This hint will be udpated regularly as Panther hints are added -- and the hints are listed in the remainder of this article (to handle it when it gets much longer after today...). For easy reference, all hints submitted that mention they were tested/tried on Panther will be labeled "10.3:" at the beginning of the hint title. If you ever wish to see all the 10.3 hints, just use the Advanced Search page (or the search box) and search on "10.3:" (without the quotes).

Update: Regarding older hints and their Panther compatibility: Given the huge volume of hints in the database, it's unreasonable to expect that I, or even a team of volunteers, will be able to test each and every one for Panther compatibility. Instead, if you happen to try a hint and it works in Panther (or if it doesn't work in Panther), add a comment to the story indicating such, and drop me a note (use the links in the new Panther toolbar near the top of the screen). I'll then go back and "badge" the story with one of these two markers:

College and Exposé

At my college dorm, everybody else (except 1 person) is a PC user. Add to that the fact that I've had Panther for a while, and that leads to me impressing all my dormmates with Exposé and the power of Quartz Extreme.

I ended up doing this about 10 times, because every time somebody new visited the dorm, all my dormmates made me show it off to them. I'd open a ton of windows from a bunch of applications, maybe a quicktime movie or two, and then run Exposé in all it's forms, fast and slow, application, system, and desktop versions. It always impressed whomever I demoed it to and it was quite fun :-D

From what I've seen, it seems like Exposé might be the single most attention-grabbing of OSX to date (that and the fast-user switching). PC and Mac users alike are mesmerized by it. I've had PC friends say that this has convinced them.

That last bit is funny, because for most PC users Exposé is difficult to understand, as they usually use their applications in maximized mode all the time and "Drag and drop" sounds to them like they need to install software or something, as it's not even used in Windows Explorer (their Finder-like File management program), where they use the bizarre right-click to copy, move or delete files (color me anal, if you will, but I don't trust "cutting" and "pasting" files in the least trustworthy or intuitive).

Erm, you DO know that in OS X you can copy and paste files in the Finder to duplicate them, right?

Right, but what he's saying is that "drag and drop" is a foreign concept to a LOT of the consumer-level computer world.

It's obvious, second-nature stuff to most Mac users, I'd say, and perhaps it's taken for granted sometimes. ;-)

good god it is overlooked everywhere else.

that's one of the things that drives me bonkers about kde and gnome in linux is they both have such *poor* drag/drop support.

Erm... Windows Explorer does have drag and drop, thats all I do being a mac user forced on a ms platform... i believe it has since 98...

The links in the hint don't seem to function - they display a plausible URL in the status bar, but of the half I tried, I always ended up at the front page. The reason for this was obvious from a little poking around; the story numbers in the metahint are out of sync.

Actually, it's weirder than that ... it seems Safari copied and pasted all but the last digit of the story code. All better now, but that seems to be a bug!

Yeah, could be. I remember that Safari's cut and paste is a little wierd at times. There was a bug for a while (not sure if it remains) where it copied text from the page source, including any extra whitespace that wouldn't be rendered.

As of now, the same bug has (apparently) shown up again with the Oct. 27 hints--all the links point to the same hint.

Rob at the bottom of this first post you said it was cool to run the expose' even in "slow Motion". how do you run it in Slow Motion?
I know when you are minimizing a finder window or something you hold down the "shift" key to make the "minimize action" go slow, but this does not work with expose'

ok.. scratch that last post from me. *i feel dumb now*. lol

i was trying to do the "slow Motion" action by pressing down the shift key and moving my mouse into the expose' HOT CORNERS of my screen. that does NOT work. but if you press the F-keys that corespond to expose' and hold the shift key it works perfect. SLOW MOTION!!! whoohooo. nice. :)

Holding down the shift key when doing Expose makes it slow motion for me. I'm using opt F9 (plus the shift key to go slow.)

I can see that Expose works nicely on the left screen shot, but what about the second monitor? Is there a way to specify when you want Expose to affect the other monitor? The one Mac in my office that could benefit the most from Panther with its Expose and fast user switching features has dual displays, so I really want to know about this; I've already heard that fast user switching rotates the cube just fine on the primary display and simply uses a disolve on the second display.

Expose work Perfect on the other monitor. I Watch TV on the 2nd, and usually have downloads, or status bars shown on the 2nd, and expose smoothly arranges the windows so that all can be seen. I do not know why the example is not shown to do that.

Did I understand this correctly: when you invoke Exposé, it does its thing on both displays at the same time?

When you exposé, all windows that are on one monitor get tiled on that monitor and all windows that are on another monitor get tiled on that monitor. It's basically as if you had one wide monitor.

I just thought I would show what I did with exposé... over 300 windows (=150 textedit, >150 stickies, and some other windows). Hehe...

Login Items?

Could somebody tell me where is the location or mechanism of the Login Items now? I can't find Login Items folder nor I can find the alias of those Login Items in Panther now!

System Prefs -- > Accounts -- > Unlock the pane if you're not logged in as an admin, click the account you want to add modify the login items for, then click the "Startup Items" button. Waa-laa, there you go.

MacHelp is also improved... type in "Startup Items" or "Open Items Automatically" and you'll find essentially what I just told you to do...

Go to System Preferences, then under System click on Accounts, there you will find Startup Items, and off you go!

I have an unusual problem signing into hotmail from my msn alerts...i click on the link and it opens Adobe InDesign, which tries to open the html page, and of course doesn't work. This isn't even a browser and i'm really not sure how to configure msn to open safari, or any other real internet browser for that matter, instead??
