Add ICQ users to iChat AV Apps
Now that AOL has linked ICQ and AIM, you can add ICQ users to your iChat buddy list. Go to your Address Book and add your buddy's ICQ number, not alias, to the AIM field in address book. Then open iChat AV and choose to add them. Your Buddy must be using the newest ICQ Lite that supports this.

Now you can see them go on and offline, and vice versa for them. In iChat AV, it's completely seamless, you just see buddies, not protocols or instant messanger icons.

This may work with iChat 1.0 but I haven't tested it.

This is how you wil get it working:

<b>First</b> add a person to your adresbook
<b>second</b> select that person via ichat as your new buddy

if you add a new person via ichat i won't work for some strange reason

They have to be using a current version of ICQ ot thier end to chat with AIM Users. Fire, Proteus, Trillian, etc... basically any third-party ICQ software won't be able to see AIM users.

The good news is that ICQ Bots aren't AIM-aware either so you shouldn't get ICQ Spam when chatting to ICQ users with iChat.

If anyone wants to help me test ICQ on AIM, salvoxdan, or 60226815.

It worked for me, with the latest download for Windoze, however iChat is sending formatting code along with the message such as iChat window color, font type and size, etc. Makes reading the messages pretty tough :-) Could be a fault of ICQ not reading the message correctly, I suppose, and in fact, that's more than likely the case.

Does anyone succeed with logging in using their ICQ-number with iChat (I enter my ICQ number as is when asked for my AIM screen name)? I get an error message about the service being down for the moment.

You need an AOL screen name

You won't be able to use a .Mac account to be able to use this, you must have an AIM screen name as your account.

Working... or not
Authored by: -mara on Sat, Jul 5 2003 at 12:17PM PDT
On my own computer I was able to add ICQ number to iChat. After that it appeared in my ICQ (3.4 Beta 16) named as name@mac.com. Both of the messengers showed each other offline, but when I send a message from ICQ it was wieved right away correctly in iChat. But I was not able to send a message to my ICQ number with iChat.

I have to test this with PC...

Although it's working with Windows version of ICQ Lite and the AIM 5.2, it doesn't work quite right with the ICQ lite and the iChat.

Although the ICQ lite user can send messages to the iChat users, but the ICQ user is not bee displayed as online from the iChat window. Thus you can't reply back to the ICQ Lite user with the iChat.

Is there any people who can use both program without the problem?

At least these work for me: you can start a new chat with the "New Chat with Person..." menu command and enter ICQ number as the AIM name.

You can also enter the ICQ number in an AIM field in the Address Book. The new ICQ number will be immediately available in the iChat contact list info, but the contact will appear unavailable no matter what. Add the contact again and now everything should be working...

...almost. Windows users seem to be getting lots of HTML with the messages I send to them. Anyone have a cure for this?

I use iChatAv and use a dot mac AIM name. With the help of a friend on ICQlite on XP, I have found that if I added him to my buddy list, he would never be shown online.

I could initiate a chat using the "File->Chat with New Person" menu and pasting his ICQ number as per previous hints, or receive an invitation (they also had to follow similar steps to invite me), but if I added him back to my buddy list while we had a chat window open, my chat window text input area would collapse i.e. disappear. As soon as I removed him from my buddy list, the text input field would reappear.

So it would appear that at this time, we can chat but we can't tell when the other is online. It sounds like if I used my AOL screen name to log in this might be obviated (I haven't tried this yet), but then every one I've given my dot mac name would need to be notified of the change. I supposed it would be too much to be able to simultaneously be logged in to multiple AIM accounts...?

I seem to be able to log in and see the status of icq going either direction - I created an icq account and downloaded the icq software. On icq I added my .mac buddy name and sent a message and it arrived and "we" (me, myself, and I) could chat back and forth. Since I was 'visiting' my iChat account, I added that buddy to my list in ichat and now I can see when my ichat account is online or not

adding my ICQ3.4Beta buddies to iChat AV Beta worked fine, and I also have your described offline problem but I could not find a method to modify my iChat/AIM-ID to the one of ICQ. Who knows about that?

Offline Probelm Solved!!! I was having the problem many were complaining about where the icq user always appearing offline and thus I could not reply to im's from that person. After some more poking around on apple discussions I found out that this might have something to do with the buddy being blocked. I looked at the buddies in my ichat using the icq number to log in and it turns out that the entire buddy list was blocked, (buddy meny --> block user was checked). I don't know why. After unblocking the entire buddy list, which I had to do one by one, I didn't have the problem and the icq user showed up as available and online in my ichat using an aim screen name. Hope this helps...
