As bbum noted in the comments to the article regarding screenshots from the command line, there are some new hidden features in the system's screenshot program.

Press space after hitting shift-command-4 (region capture) and you'll get a camera icon and (at least on my machine) the underlying window highlighted in yellow. Move the camera over another window and the yellow highlight shifts to that window. Click the mouse and you capture the highlighted window.

Additionally, holding control (while using either shift-command-3 or shift-command-4) will result in the image being saved to the clipboard instead of to a file.

On my mac (Quicksilver 867), the window highlights in blue.

Highlight color depends on preferences. Somewhere, somehow, mine has reset to blue, as well.

It's in Blue because that is the color you selected (or the MacOS X Default) inn your General Preferences "Highlight" color...

Window capture limitation

One (perhaps obvious) caveat of the window capture: it doesn't actually capture the window contents, it just captures the area of the screen occupied by the window. So while you can select a window that is in the background, if it is partially covered by another window, that window (or at least the portion of it covering the selected window) will be captured instead of the contents of the selected one. As I said, this may have been obvious, but I thought it worth mentioning anyway.

I'm wondering if there isn't a magical key combo that will do the trick.

Also, you can capture desktop icons and even the dock (although the dock appears to keep the highlight color in the shot).

In 10.4.2 the underlying window is totally (by itself - ignores the overlapping window) captured...

capture menus

open a menu, and then press cmd-shift-4, and then space. then you can also select the menu to capture, and not only windows. even the menubar can be captured that way!

Whoa. You can also capture the entire dock, or just dock icons. But by far the coolest thing you can capture is, you can capture the area of the menubar that holds the menu extras alone. Now that's cool!

captures DVD screenshots

unlike the system function, the cli version captures DVD screens too.
I use sleep 10; screencapture -c and switch to the DVD player....

Only captures PDFs?

Despite having changed my AppleScreenShotFormat preference to JPEG (as detailed in another hint, I think), screencapture still writes PDFs.

It seems that Apple has decided the issue for us, unless anyone else can think of or discover another trick?

You can still use the Grab utility, which only saves a TIFF file. At least a TIFF is more useful than a PDF for cropping or otherwise manipulating the screen shot.

The defaults write hack no longer works in 10.2, and unfortunately even the latest TinkerTool hasn't found a way to work around this yet.

PDF might be a nice *option* to have sometimes, but I would rather use PNG.

My question to Apple is, which BRANIAC at Apple decided that command-shift-3 and /usr/sbin/screencapture should now ONLY create PDF files, where PNG and TIFF were previously available too? GRrrr

So far (as of August 31), there's no way around this, but you can always open PDFs in Preview and Export them as Tiffs (or BMP, JP2, JPEG, MacPaint, PDF, Photoshop, PICT, PNG, QuickTime Image, SGI, or TGA files, to quote from the pull-down menu that I captured, then scanned w/ OmniPage Pro X - serious technology overkill).
