on 10.1.5, i had to disable the dock and use drop drawers and lite switch to get the control-tab app switching combo working. is it possible to switch the command key to some other key in 10.2? among other things, command-tab conflicts with tool bar cycling in quark...

That really seems like a Quark problem. (One of billions, from what I understand.) I prefer command +1 or command+ ` (backtick) for window cycling within an app. You may be able to change this. I did it for IE which has a three finger sequence by default.

it could be a quark issue... but the tool cycling command has been command + tab (and command + shift+ tab) since way back before OS 9 (quite possibly since before quark 3).

since i use quark and this key combo often, i'd like to change the dock's default behavior without disabling the dock. without the dock in the picture and with lite switch in place, everything's fine. but i really wouldn't mind the dock if it would allow me to configure app switching like OS 8.5-9's app switcher did. apple, let us configure app switching!

Lite Switch, which is my preferred app-switcher, seems unable to wrest Command-Tab from the dock. In 10.1 it was able to intercept the command-tab combo before the dock, and thus do its thing. No longer, in Jaguar. I can config it for other key-combos, but I like Cmd-Tab. And LiteSwitch supports Command Shift as a reverse-order switch command, which the dock does not. :-(

Yup, the Command-Shift-Tab thingy'doo does indeed switch apps "backwards" in the dock. Go Apple.

Note that he said "Command Shift", not "Command Shift Tab" - once you'd hit Command-Tab you could drop your pinkie down to the shift key from tab and cycle backwards. Not having to hit three keys when two is surprisingly handy when your right hand is on the mouse.

I have LiteSwitch set for Option-Tab anyway.

When using Command-Tab it's too easy to press Command-Q by mistake.

BTW, Command-Shift-Tab always reversed the direction. This isn't new.

I <b>like</b> being able to cycle through applications, and the Windows way of switch back and forth is really quite annoying, especially the way that it works with browser windows.
Now we need a hint to tell us how to hack it back!

The behavior is subtle and takes some getting used to:

Stroke the Tab key once OR MORE while holding the Command key down
The application change will occur when you RELEASE the Command key rather than each time you stroke the Tab key.

Put the Dock in view, start several apps and then try the instructions above while watching the dock. You'll soon get the hang of it.

right. it always has. but i want to switch the default app switching combo to control + tab, and there's no easy way to do it (like there was in OS 8.5-9.x).

i guess i'll poke around in 10.2 when i get it tomorrow and report back.

It hasn't "always worked" at all. See the start of this thread. It used to work in a useless "cycle through everything" manner. Now it does something much more sensible IMHO.

Is there anyway to change the Command-Tab function to a different command, or at least turn the dang thing off? I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts in classic that interfere with this. Like in Quark, you use Command-Tab to switch between tools in the tool palette. In Mac OS 9, you can change or turn off the App switch key command, but I don't see how to do this in X. Argh! Very annoying having to move the mouse back and forth between my work and the tool palette.

surely there is, get the excellent app called keyboard maestro. it features a builtin app switcher, reminiscent of OS9's GoMac, which i remapped to option-tab to not conflict with the built-in app switcher; but more importantly for you it allows you to remap key combos both system wide and for individual apps

All Keyboard Maestro seems to do is add Option-Tab rather than delete Command-Tab and then add Option-Tab.
